While we’ll have the full box office report to you tomorrow morning (with our thoughts on the matter), early reports indicate that Columbia Pictures’ Venom could top $80M at the domestic box office after opening on 4,000+ screens. While critics smashed the film (it’s a disaster), it’s also pretty fun. In fact, it received a strong B+ CinemaScore from moviegoers. For perspective, this opening will be an October record previously held by Gravity, which celebrated $55.7M. Venom’s reported budget is in the $100M range, which means there’s still some work to do before getting ahead of ourselves and screaming “sequel”. With that said, let’s see what the international numbers look like tomorrow afternoon.
Tom Hardy puts on a performance for the ages as the title character and Eddie Brock, Riz Ahmed’s Carlton Drake becomes one with Riot, and Michelle Williams appears as Eddie’s love interest, Anne Weying.
“One of Marvel’s greatest and most complex characters takes center stage as Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) becomes the host for the alien symbiote Venom. As a journalist, Eddie has been trying to take down the notorious founder of the Life Foundation, genius Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) – and that obsession ruined his career and his relationship with his girlfriend, Anne Weying (Michelle Williams). Upon investigating one of Drake’s experiments, the alien Venom merges with Eddie’s body, and he suddenly has incredible new superpowers, as well as the chance to do just about whatever he wants. Twisted, dark, unpredictable, and fueled by rage, Venom leaves Eddie wrestling to control dangerous abilities that he also finds empowering and intoxicating. As Eddie and Venom need each other to get what they’re looking for, they become more and more intertwined – where does Eddie end and Venom begin?”
