A Utah cult-favorite haunt has been reborn inside a San Antonio mall.

There’s something new lurking inside San Antonio’s Ingram Park Mall this Halloween season, and it definitely isn’t another clothing store.

Spookshow Haunted House has arrived in Texas, bringing an all-new House of Pain to San Antonio and turning an ordinary trip to the mall into something considerably more sinister.

Located on the first floor of Ingram Park Mall, Spookshow invites guests to step inside a crooked house with a reputation that stretches back generations. According to the attraction’s lore, locals have long whispered about the house on South Hill Lane, along with one very specific warning: stay away.
Naturally, Spookshow would prefer you ignore that advice.

From the Utah Desert to San Antonio

Owners Kelly and Chris Porter previously operated Spookshow Haunted Screampark in Price, Utah, an outdoor attraction that developed a reputation for delivering an intense, blood-soaked experience far removed from the traditional haunted house walkthrough.

In 2023, The Scare Factor gave the Utah attraction an impressive 8.71 out of 10, with particularly high marks for its special effects, scare factor and costuming. The review described a sprawling outdoor experience filled with detailed characters, elaborate environments, aggressive scares and plenty of gore.

Now, that Utah cult-favorite has been reborn inside a San Antonio shopping mall, trading the open desert for an indoor maze of darkness, monsters and mayhem.

And honestly? We’re into it.

San Antonio’s new Spookshow doesn’t come with quite the blood-soaking as the previous Utah incarnation, but is sure to scare the cr*p out of you!

There is something beautifully strange about walking past familiar storefronts and food court signs before heading directly into what Spookshow proudly calls San Antonio’s House of Pain.

There’s Movie Magic Behind the Monsters

Spookshow also has something working in its favor that horror fans should probably know about. Kelly Porter has spent nearly a decade working professionally in film hair, makeup and special makeup effects.

Her career has put her behind the scenes on productions with talent including Jenna Ortega, Sophia Bush, Sacha Calle, Dane DeHaan, Anne Heche and T-Pain, among others. Before entering the film industry, Porter developed her special-effects makeup skills while working in haunted attractions and later at a fantasy theme park.

In other words, creating monsters came before movie stars.

That background adds another layer of intrigue to Spookshow. Haunted attractions live and die by atmosphere, characters and the ability to convince guests, even briefly, that whatever is standing in front of them might actually be real. Having a professional makeup and effects artist at the center of the operation definitely brings the event to life.

Welcome to the House of Pain

For its San Antonio debut, Spookshow is introducing guests to The House of Pain.

The story begins with a crooked house on South Hill Lane that generations of locals have supposedly learned to avoid. Stories about the property have been passed down for years, and getting too close has traditionally been considered something of a death wish.

For you, getting close is exactly what your ticket buys.
Spookshow isn’t giving away everything waiting inside, and that is probably for the best. Half the fun of walking into a new haunted attraction is having absolutely no idea what somebody has built behind those walls.

What we do know is the pedigree behind it.

The former Utah version of Spookshow earned praise for detailed makeup, heavy character interaction, elaborate props, practical environments and a willingness to push its experience further than a conventional collection of jump scares.

Now San Antonio gets to see what happens when that creative team builds an entirely new incantation of Spookshow indoors.

Your Next Mall Trip Just Got Weirder

Perhaps our favorite part of the whole story is still the location.

Haunted houses have taken over warehouses, abandoned buildings, farms, forests and old factories for decades. But there is something undeniably fun about discovering one buried inside a working shopping mall.

Imagine explaining your evening:

Grab dinner. Do a little shopping. Get psychologically damaged. Maybe hit the pretzel place afterward.

Perfect.

Spookshow Haunted House is located inside Ingram Park Mall at 6301 NW Loop 410 in San Antonio, in Suite 023A on the first floor. Guests are instructed to enter through the south mall entrance and, in perhaps the most haunted-house set of directions imaginable, follow the searchlight.

General Admission is currently listed at $20, while the $30 VIP ticket includes skip-the-line access and, interestingly, two trips through the haunted house.

Yes, they are letting you go back in. Whether that sounds like a bonus or a threat probably tells us everything we need to know about you.

So, the House of Pain has a new address. And somehow, it’s at the mall.
