Hooray for family-friendly horror!

The highest opening weekend in Eli Roth’s career to date, the Jack Black-starring The House With a Clock in Its Walls stands triumphantly at the top of the box office this weekend, raking in $26.8 million domestically in its debut weekend. That’s higher than the opening weekend of similar film Goosebumps, which had a $23.6 million opening back in 2015.

The film’s production budget was a reported $42 million, so it still has a ways to go on the road to being profitable. But besting Goosebumps is no doubt a victory for now.

Elsewhere on the charts, Neon’s Assassination Nation was a huge flop this weekend, pulling in just $1 million in 1,400 theaters. As Exhibitor Relations notes, the Purge-like film had the worst debut of the year for any movie released in 1,000+ theaters. Big ole yikes.

As for The Predator, Shane Black’s (incredibly fun) attempt to re-start the franchise dropped -65% in its second weekend, making $8.7 million for a domestic total of $40.4 million. Given it was made on a production budget of a massive $88 million, and that’s not including the marketing spend, it seems this may be the end of that franchise for a while. Sigh.

Meanwhile, The Nun continues to scare up impressive numbers, passing $100 million domestically this weekend. Worldwide, Corin Hardy’s fright flick is approaching $300 million!
