Despite premiering at SXSW eight years ago in 2016 and getting its initial wide release six years ago in 2018, director Bobby Miller’s The Cleanse has never made its way to Blu-ray – until now that is! The dark horror/comedy is finally making its way to disc courtesy of the folks at Sony Pictures beginning Tuesday, May 21. Today, we at Fango bring you an exclusive behind the scenes clip that shows us what went into bringing the movie’s practical, chocolate munching monster to life. Check it out.
Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with CGI, but it’s always nice to see some practical creature effects in a film. More importantly, the above clip is just a small taste of what The Cleanse has to offer on Blu-ray, as the disc is absolutely loaded down with special features. In the modern era, we’re lucky if certain movies get released on disc at all, let alone with a selection of curated bonus content. In this case, Sony and Miller went all-in.

The film stars Kyle Gallner, of Smile fame, as well as Johnny Galecki, who slasher fans may know from I Know What You Did Last Summer. The impressive ensemble also includes the likes of Oliver Platt (Lake Placid) and Anjelica Huston (The Addams Family). The official synopsis reads as follows:
“Johnny Galecki (TV’s Big Bang Theory) plays Paul Berger, an unemployed, down and out, heartbroken man searching for happiness. When Paul sees an ad for a spiritual retreat promising to restart your life, he immediately signs up, hoping to cleanse himself and fix his broken life. But after only a few days, he discovers the cleanse is releasing more than just everyday toxins… a lot more.”
“Real talk: This disc represents the culmination of your boy as a writer/director. As I move to fiction writing, it might become the only physical proof of my filmmaking existence,” Miller said of the forthcoming Blu-ray. We’ve also got the cover art for the release, which you can check out below.
The Cleanse Blu-ray is available for pre-order on Amazon right now and retails for $29.99. For more, check out our retrospective interview with the late, great Roger Corman.
