The classic fixed camera survival horror is enjoying a mini-resurgence as indie developers, raised on the nightmares created by Capcom and Konami, seek to bring the formula into the modern era. Sometimes it’s fairly successful, other times…less so, but it remains interesting to see each attempt to pull off the ultimate nostalgia trick for horror game fans.

One of those looking to make a good fist of things is YouTube channel Residence of Evil (with help from MoonGlint)and its project RoE: Vigil, (previously known as Vigil: Prophecy of the Bestowed), a classic fixed camera survival horror heavily inspired by the original Resident Evil, and made in Unreal Engine 4.

In the latest footage first released last week for the game project, Residence of Evil shows off the characters wandering about the spooky locations, with enemies not yet shown. It looks and sounds suitably moody, if a tad familiar. It does show how far it has progressed since last year though.

Residence of Evil previously described the game as having four unique play styles corresponding to the character you choose. This also includes the locales within the mansion that you’ll visit that are unique to each character.

You can actually download a demo to try it for yourself, and perhaps if you like what you play, you can keep an eye on the project’s progress by subscribing to Residence of Evil’s channel.

Vigil certainly looks the part, but we shall have to wait and see if it can capture the essence of classic survival horror without the shortcomings.
