Okay, we already have a remake of Resident Evil (and a damn good one at that). But that’s not stopping fansite Residence of Evil, who have recently announced that they’re working on a tribute game entitled Vigil: Prophecy of the Bestowed, which when you watch the official announcement, you know where the inspiration is coming from.

The game is being developed by MoonGlint (who has 10 years of experience in recreating game environments in the Unreal Engine), and has all of the trademarks of the original Resident Evil, including the fixed camera angles, the limited inventory space, and a mansion. And like the original game, with it’s “brilliant” dialogue, Vigil will also have a humorous side to it.

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking: Doesn’t this scream for a DCMA takedown by Capcom? And you’d be right. In fact, the original title for the game was to be “Residence of Evil: The Game”, and was originally using assets that were directed taken from the REmake.

Luckily, however, the team have put up a video explaining the concerns, including the explanation that the ripped assets were meant to be placeholders (though the new assets aren’t ready just yet), and how the game is meant to be a homage to classic horror movies in addition to Resident Evil, and not a direct clone. The video also discusses the gameplay elements, including the four unique play styles corresponding to the character you choose. This also includes the locales within the mansion that you’ll visit that are unique to each character.

As for cost, the game will be released exclusively on PC for free, and ports to consoles will be determined by the response to the PC version. It’s still early yet, but man, this definitely sounds like fun.
