Stephen King’s sequel to his classic novel The Shining, Doctor Sleep, is getting a feature film adaptation with Gerald’s Game director Mike Flanagan at the helm, set for release on January 24, 2020. Recently, Ewan McGregor was cast as the now middle-aged Danny Torrance, and McGregor just teased a faithful adaptation in a chat with Stephen Colbert.

Well it’s very faithful to the book, the script,” McGregor told Colbert last night. “If you’ve read the novel, that’s the story we’re going to tell.”

Filming begins in September, with Rebecca Ferguson playing Rose the Hat, Alex Essoe as Wendy Torrance, Carl Lumbly as Dick Hallorann and Zahn McClarnon as Crow Daddy.

Flanagan is rewriting a script penned by Akiva Goldsman.

Doctor Sleep takes place years after the events at the Overlook Hotel and focuses on the the now middle-aged Danny who is still traumatized. He’s followed in his father’s footsteps and has problems with anger management and alcoholism. He soon gives up drinking and settles in a small town in New Hampshire. While there, his psychic abilities start to resurface and he develops a psychic link with a 12-year-old girl named Abra Stone who he must save after he discovers her life is being threatened by a tribe of paranormals led by Rose the Hat.”

Trevor Macy will produce along with Vertigo’s Jon Berg. Goldsman is exec producer.
