No matter who wins or loses, the fact remains that this year’s Academy Awards are pretty important for the horror genre. It’s no secret that the Academy very rarely honors genre cinema with so much as nominations, so the fact that Get Out, a horror movie, and The Shape of Water, a creature feature, each have several nominations is a big deal.
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water is nominated in THIRTEEN categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actor. As for Get Out, Jordan Peele’s social horror film has nabbed four nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Leading Actor and Best Screenplay.
Yes, two genre films are nominated for Best Picture, which is HUGE.
As if all that wasn’t awesome enough, even Jordan Vogt Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island is up for an Oscar, nominated for Best Achievement in Visual Effects.
