The Toronto International Film Festival delivered a trio of pretty cool new horror films that will be coming our way in 2021.

The first big acquisition comes out of the Midnight Madness program and has the honor of allegedly being the “first ever drive-in theater acquisition.”

Vertical Entertainment and Redbox Entertainment have just closed a deal to acquire North American distribution rights to Shadow in the Cloud, from director Roseanne Liang, which is teased for fans of “The Twilight Zone” as it’s described as “a new nightmare at 20,000 feet”.

In the film, Chloë Grace Moretz (The Amityville Horror, Let Me In, Suspiria) stars as a WWII pilot trying to warn her obstinate male comrades of a sinister stowaway aboard their Flying Fortress. Nick Robinson and Callan Mulvey also star.

Deadline hears the deal was near $5 million, and the plan is to release multiplatform including theatrical next summer.

Bloody Disgusting’s Joe Lipsett reviewed the film, calling it a “mixed bag,” adding that “the tense and mysterious first half is completely undermined by a clichéd, ridiculous second half that ends the film on a far more conventional and less satisfying note.

The pic premiered last Saturday at Toronto’s Visa Skyline Drive-In at CityView, where festival organizers enhanced the scares with some props they made for the occasion, adds the site.
