Filmmaker Christopher Landon and star Jessica Rothe officially announced a third Happy Death Day film last April, and while there’s still much work to be done before it gets a green light, both remain committed to making it happen.

“I actually just had dinner with Chris Landon last week, and we have a sneaky plan,” Rothe tells Coming Soon. “It’s not even that sneaky of a plan; it’s just that we feel incredibly passionately about making the third film happen.

“We are dedicated to do the legwork on our end, in terms of developing it and getting it to where it needs to be so that it becomes a no-brainer for the studio.”

She continues, “Chris feels really strongly, and I agree, he’s come up with an incredible, incredible end of the trilogy and a way to kind of perfectly cap the movies.

“I just love Tree, and I want to give her her final day — although, because she’s a final girl, I’m sure there is no final day. It could just keep going and going and going. But we both feel very passionately about it.”

Rothe adds, “I want to tell the fans, thank you for your patience, and we are working on it, but I don’t think that they’ll be disappointed.”

Back in 2020, Landon revealed that Happy Death Day to Us is the working title for the third installment. “I think we’re all excited by it, because it’s different than the other two films,” he said at the time.

Happy Death Day grossed $125 million worldwide for Universal in 2017, but Happy Death Day 2U only made $64 million two years later — which is no doubt a hurdle in getting the trilogy capper made.

Roth’s latest film, the sci-fi horror thriller Affection, opens tomorrow. She also has the sci-fi mystery Imposters coming soon, and she’s set to star with Jane Levy in Shudder’s survival slasher River.

Meanwhile, Landon recently signed on to helm Screen Gems’ supernatural horror film Final Boarding, and he’s attached to reunite with Drop co-writers Chris Roach and Jillian Jacobs on the Netflix thriller Blink of an Eye.
