The critically acclaimed and award-winning Lovecraftian video game Bloodborne is getting an animated feature adaptation for Sony Pictures, Variety reports.

More importantly, the animated feature will be R-rated, fully embracing the violence and viscera the horror game is recognized for.

In the game, players follow Hunter as he travels the decrepit Gothic, Victorian-era-inspired city of Yharnam, a place of deranged denizens and nightmarish monsters, in the bid to find a blood cure.

Sanford Panitch, president of Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group, revealed the news at Sony’s CinemaCon presentation tonight, confirming the long-rumored film will be “very trueto the gory nature of Bloodborne.

The gore and the ghastly creature designs signal that animation is the perfect route for this adaptation.

That Sony is developing an adaptation shouldn’t be too surprising. Bloodborne was developed by FromSoftware and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.

The animated film is co-produced by PlayStation Productions, Lyrical Animation, and creator and gamer Seán McLoughlin, better known by his pseudonym JackSepticEye. Seán is a gamer who has spent years in the world of Bloodborne for his over 48 million online fans.

Bloodborne earned high critical praise and Bloody Disgusting’s editor’s distinction in 2019. Our review: “Bloodborne is very much a Dark Souls game. Many of the ideas are here, they’re just presented in a Gothic horror package that’s darker, bloodier, scarier, and so much better. And,Bloodborne is one of the most challenging games I’ve ever played. It’s also one of the most beautiful, unforgettable, and rewarding gaming experiences since, well, Dark Souls II.

Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are also behind Justin Lin’s upcoming adaptation of Helldivers, starring Jason Momoa.
