If you’ve been wondering just where Undead Labs’ State of Decay 3 has been for the past five years, you’re not the only one. Announced back in 2020 during the Xbox Series Showcase, there hasn’t been a heck of a lot more from the developer since that reveal. However, publisher Xbox Game Studios has indicated that the game is still very much alive and in development.

Speaking with Gamesradar+, Xbox Game Studios lead Craig Duncan was asked about the game during last week’s Developer Direct reveals, commenting that he has been keeping tabs on the project over the past year. “I have done a number of visits to that studio in the last six to eight months. I have sat and played the game with the team a bunch of times. It’s coming on really well. We’re very excited about the franchise and its potential.”

And while Duncan didn’t reveal anything definitive as to when fans would see an update on State of Decay 3, he did state that he “will certainly see a lot more of it in the coming year.”

Set years after a zombie apocalypse nearly wiped out humankind, State of Decay 3 is touted as “the next evolution in the State of Decay franchise.” As the zombie threat continues to claim lives, you must fight back and reclaim lost ground, carving out a life for your community of survivalist homesteaders.

Building on the previous entries in the series, State of Decay 3 will feature a much larger, “truly shared” open world, allowing Undead Labs to “bring emotional weight into that aspect of the game, with more context in how they want to be telling stories.”

State of Decay 3 is currently in development for PC via Steam and the Xbox Series.
