Rapper and actor Scott Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi, is set to direct and star in his first feature, a horror/romance titled When the Light Dies.
Confirming the news on his Twitter/X account over the weekend, Cudi added that he’s “been wanting to direct movies ever since I was a kid, and I’m finally stepping into this new chapter,” and that “I’m goin to make a page on IG thats dedicated to bringing u in on the journey. I’ve been doing test shoots, trying diff lighting techniques and trying diff lenses, and I wanna give u guys access to my mind. Who’s joining the journey?”
Cudi’s most recent genre offerings include a starring role alongside Mia Goth in Ti West’s sexploitation slasher X, where he played pornstar Jackson Hole. Cudi also took on an executive producer role for the next two features in West’s X trilogy, Pearl and MaXXXine. In 2024 he starred as The Thinker in M. Night Shyamalan’s concert-set thriller Trap, and is soon set for a role in the action horror-comedy Hell Naw from Keith and Kenny Lucas.
Cudi and West also recently collaborated on the eleven-minute video for the former’s new single, Neverland, which follows “a 200 year old vampire who takes his newly initiated love on her first feed.” Neverland has assembled a murderer’s row of horror talent behind and in front of the camera, with Jordan Peele producing and Brittany Snow (X), Kiernan Shipka (Totally Killer, Longlegs), Haley Joel Osment (Tusk, The Sixth Sense), Cary Elwes (Saw) and Brandon Scott (Descendent) also starring. Neverland will premiere at Tribeca Film Festival next month.
Look out for more on When the Light Dies and Cudi’s promising horror career as we get it!
