Audiences showed up big time to support original cinema at theaters over the weekend, with Ryan Coogler’s vampire movie Sinners scoring both rave reviews and box office glory.
Released in 3,308 theaters across the United States beginning on Thursday night, Warner Bros.’ Sinners debuted at the domestic box office with an estimated $45.6 million, giving it the genre’s highest opening weekend of 2025 by a long shot. This year’s previous record holder was NEON’s The Monkey, which scared up $14 million its own domestic opening weekend.
Worldwide, Sinners has already pulled in $61 million (via Box Office Mojo), with the film on track to becoming the highest grossing horror movie of the year in just a matter of days. The current record holder is The Monkey with a worldwide total of $68.5 million at this time.
Not only is Sinners now the #1 movie at the domestic box office, but it has also scored the biggest domestic opening weekend for an original movie this decade so far. In fact, it’s the biggest opening for an original movie since Jordan Peele’s Us debuted with $71 million in 2019!
Sinners is also the best reviewed wide release this decade (according to Discussing Film), with a 98% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s another crazy stat. Sinners is the only horror film in over 35 years to receive an “A” CinemaScore, which reflects just how much general audiences are absolutely devouring and loving every second of Coogler’s epic period piece.
Variety notes, “Nearly 40% of initial ticket buyers were Black, while 35% were white, 18% were Hispanic and 5% were Asian, reflecting a broad turnout. Premium large formats like Dolby and 4DX accounted for 45% of ticket sales; Imax alone represented 20% of revenues.”
The production budget for Sinners was somewhere in the ballpark of $100 million, so it’ll need to keep making money in the coming weeks in order to make up for both budget and marketing costs. But it’s looking like the film will have no problem turning a profit in theaters, and there’s no metric by which it’s not already a massive success story for original horror cinema.
Michael B. Jordan plays dual roles in Sinners, starring alongside an incredible cast including Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Benson Miller, and Delroy Lindo. Here’s the synopsis from Warner Bros…
“Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”
Trust us, you don’t want to miss your chance to see this one on the big screen!
