Fresh off of Demi Moore’s Golden Globe win for her role in Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, the body horror hit is heading back to more than 350 theaters nationwide on Friday, January 17.
Starring Moore and Margaret Qualley, The Substance racked up a global box office total of $79.3 million ($16 million of those from the domestic box office alone) following its original run in theaters last year, and is currently part of the Academy Awards buzz circling around ahead of nominations on January 17.
In The Substance (which, refreshingly in a world where everything seems immediately forced into the franchise mill, has no sequel planned), an ‘ageing’ Hollywood star (Moore) uses a mysterious black market drug known as The Substance to transform herself into an enhanced version of herself (Qualley). The satirical shocker was one of our Best Of 2024, and we’re certainly not the only ones who ranked it as such.
The Substance is currently streaming on MUBI, and available for rent or purchase on all major digital outlets. Check your local theater to see if The Substance is returning near you.
