This is not a drill! During The Game Awards, the folks at Saber Interactive decided to drop a bombshell announcement for fans of the Nintendo 64 era of gaming as a new Turok game is officially on the way. That’s right! It’s time to get your dinosaur hunting shoes on because this is happening. What’s more, this is going to be a prequel that takes us back to the beginning of the franchise. Get ready for Turok: Origins. Check out the announcement trailer for yourself.

If I may? Fuck yes. Absolutely fuck yes. I can only speak for myself but I poured countless hours into Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the N64. I’ll be the first to admit that the 2008 Turok game kind of missed me, in no small part because the response was kind of lackluster. This, however? This looks to be the goods. The visuals are impressive. The dinosaurs are cool. The combat looks like a blast. This is the goods. And hey, since when was another AAA dinosaur video game a bad thing? We’ve got to do something until Instinction arrives, right

For now, details remain a little bit scarce. Save for the trailer and the title, no other details have been confirmed by Saber. This is the same studio behind World War Z: Aftermath and the upcoming, much anticipated Jurassic Park: Survival. Add another big franchise to the list! The synopsis for the new game reads as follows:

“Beware, oblivion is at hand! Play as the legendary Turok warriors to face off against ferocious dinosaurs and a terrifying alien threat that seeks to destroy all human life in the galaxy. Unleash devastating attacks on your enemies with weapons and abilities, and harness fallen enemies’ DNA to upgrade your arsenal. Embark on a high-stakes adventure — solo or with friends — to unravel mysteries that hold the key to saving humanity.”

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter first hit consoles in 1997, becoming a favorite of the N64 era. The game was followed by two sequels, including the acclaimed Turok 2: Seeds of Evil and Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion. The franchise has been dormant for 16 years now. At some point, everything old is new again. It seems like a good time to give this one another go. Here’s hoping it lives up to expectations.

Turok: Origins does not have a release date, but stay tuned. For more, check out our list of the ten best horror video games of 2024
