Musician and filmmaker Flying Lotus follows up his shocking and surrealist debut feature Kuso (and the outrageous short Ozzy’s Dungeon from V/H/S/99) with Ash, a sci-fi horror set for a theatrical release in 2025 via RLJE Films and Shudder.
Today’s new trailer debuted at Shudder’s panel at New York Comic Con, and gives a sneak peek of stars Eiza González (Baby Driver, 3 Body Problem), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad, Black Mirror), Iko Uwais (The Raid, The Night Comes For Us), Beulah Koale (Next Goal Wins), and Kate Elliott (Wentworth) in action.
On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.
Ash was written by Jonni Remmler and will feature an original score composed by Flying Lotus (real name Steven D. Bingley-Ellison).
In an interview with Hypebeast, Lotus went into the differences between filming Ash and his bonkers feature debut Kuso from 2017:
It’s completely different. With Kuso, I did so much of that at my house and a lot of it was me begging homies to do stuff, whereas Ash was a real production. Everything was really legit. Going to an office, being in meetings every day with fluorescent lights. It was great working with professionals who have crazy experience in the industry. People go to New Zealand to shoot sci-fi and fantasy movies, so I was among all these people who worked on The Lord of the Rings and other Peter Jackson and James Cameron stuff.
If Kuso was too much for you, fear not, as Lotus promises Ash is a lot more palatable
I think it will be challenging for some people, but not in the same way. This is very much a straightforward narrative film. There are some crazy things in it, but I think it’s not as crazy as anything in Kuso. This one is a bit more contained.
Ash will hit theaters sometime in 2025 with a Shudder release to follow. Keep your eyes peeled for more updates because this thing looks insane:
