The stars of 2022’s hit thriller Fall are reuniting for a remake of a late era Wes Craven-produced picture. Virginia Gardner has joined Grace Caroline Currey in the upcoming reimagining of The Breed, per Deadline. Currey first became attached to the project earlier this year. Now, Gardner is set to join her former co-star for another round of terror. This time, they’ll be duking it out against a pack of deadly dogs.
Gardner and Currery will headline what is being billed as an “unconventional reimagining of the Wes Craven cult classic.” Brothers Nathan and Griff Furst are set to direct the film, which is being co-produced and financed by Daro Film Distribution. Page Kennedy (The Meg) is also on board to star. This new take on The Breed follows “a group of people searching for abandoned dogs on a remote island, with terror-filled consequences.”
Both Gardner and Currey are no strangers to genre filmmaking. Fall became a big hit in 2022, so much so that it is now becoming a full-on trilogy. Gardner previously starred in 2018’s Halloween, as well as the horror/comedy Monster Party. Currey, meanwhile, is probably best known for her work in DC’s Shazam! films but her resume also includes Annabelle: Creation and Vampire Dad.
The Breed is an interesting target for a remake. The film, which was directed by Nicholas Mastandrea, does have Craven’s name attached as the lead producer, that much is true. That said, it wasn’t exactly a hit in its day by any means, nor was it embraced by critics. But it did have a pretty interesting concept and has developed a little bit of a following in the nearly 20 years since it first came out. The synopsis for the original reads as follows:
“A group of friends (Michelle Rodriguez, Taryn Manning, Hill Harper and Oliver Hudson) fly away to a deserted island for the weekend, an island once controlled by a special canine research unit. They soon realize that this beautiful getaway will become their biggest nightmare. Inspired by the horror classics, Cujo and The Birds. The Breed takes you into the jaws of a flesh eating pack of wild dogs, genetically engineered to hunt and kill. Outnumbered and trapped they struggle to outsmart and outrun this terrifying species.”
My personal belief has always been that remakes of movies that didn’t quite work the first time around are the better way to go. That’s not to take anything away from those who enjoy the original but if there’s a cool concept up for grabs, why not give it a fair shake? We’ll see how this one comes out in the wash.
