Sharpen up those pickaxes, because My Bloody Valentine is making a comeback. The ‘80s slasher franchise has been away for some time, dating back to the 3D remake released by Lionsgate in 2009. Now, we have word that the folks at Blumhouse Productions are gearing up to make a brand new movie in the series. This, according to the folks at Bloody Disgusting, who were first to report the news.
Unfortunately, details are slim right now. There is no word on who might be in the director’s chair, nor is it clear who is writing the script. It’s also unclear if this would be a reboot of some kind, or if this would be a legacy sequel that would keep the original film intact within the continuity. But this certainly seems like something in Blumhouse’s wheelhouse, as the studio is not only the number one name in horror right now, but they also have revived several franchises in recent years. Most notably the David Gordon Green Halloween trilogy, which was quite successful.
Directed by George Mihalka, the original My Bloody Valentine was released in 1981 during Hollywood’s original slasher craze. It was a modest success in its day, but found a long life and a cult following thanks to home video. Eventually, Lionsgate resurrected the franchise with My Bloody Valentine 3D in 2009 during the slasher remake craze. That film was quite a big success, pulling in more than $100 million at the box office against a $14 million budget. For those who might need a refresher, the synopsis reads as follows:
“Ten years ago, an inexperienced coal miner named Tom Hanniger caused an accident that killed five men and put a sixth, Harry Warden, into a coma. A year later, on Valentine’s Day, Harry woke up and murdered 22 people with a pickaxe before dying. Now Tom has returned home, still haunted by the past. And something else is back in Harmony: a pickaxe-wielding killer in a miner’s mask, who may be the ghost of Harry, come to claim Tom and his friends.”
It sounds like this one is in the early days, but it also feels like something that could come together rather quickly, provided the right circumstances. So stay tuned and we’ll be sure to bring you more details as we get them.
