Filming is now underway on the BBC’s adaptation of H. G. Wells’ classic novel The War of the Worlds, and thanks to the BBC Press Office Twitter account, we can share the first official image from the production.

“War of the Worlds” will be three-part miniseries directed by Craig Viveiros and starring Eleanor Tomlinson, Rafe Spall, Robert Carlyle, and Rupert Graves. Unlike most adaptations, which were set in modern times, the show will stick closer to the book by being set in Edwardian England, hence the old fashioned costumes. Writer Peter Harness, who previously worked on “Doctor Who”, was quoted by BBC America as saying that the series will be “a collision of sci-fi, period drama and horror”, before going on to describe how it will not shy away from the unsettling or unpredictable aspects of Wells’ novel.

If you head over to Brinkwire, you can view some pictures from the Liverpool set which were snapped by passers by, although there’s currently no sign of either the Tripods or the Martians. Looks like we’ll have to wait until “War of the Worlds” airs in the UK later this year to get a load of the extraterrestrial invaders.
