In the world of the Emmy Awards, straight-to-streaming movies are considered “TV Movies,” which is how Predator sequel Prey was able to score an “Outstanding TV Movie” nomination at this year’s ceremony. Dan Trachtenberg’s one-shot spinoff movie, in fact, was nominated for SIX Emmy Awards in total this year, and it’s not the only horror movie to get recognition.
Released last Halloween on Disney+, the decades-later spooky sequel Hocus Pocus 2 is also nominated for “Outstanding Television Movie” at the Emmy Awards this year!
In addition to that nomination, Hocus Pocus 2 has also been nominated in the “Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special” and “Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes” categories, the film scoring three nominations in total.
Hocus Pocus 2 was a massive hit for Disney+ last year, breaking records for the streaming service and allowing for Hocus Pocus 3 to officially get the green light earlier this year.
Will Hocus Pocus 2 actually take home any Emmys? We’ll find out on September 18.
The new film was billed as “the spooky sequel to the 1993 Halloween classic,” with Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy all back as the Sanderson Sisters.
“It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters who were executed for practicing witchcraft, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to figure out how to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before midnight on All Hallow’s Eve.”
Anne Fletcher (The Guilt Trip) directed Hocus Pocus 2 for Disney+.
Stay tuned for more on Hocus Pocus 3 as we learn it.
