The Historic Lake House Hotel in the Pocono Mountains is a True Hotel of Horror

There is a place deep in the Pocono Mountains, surrounded by lush woods, gorgeous trees, and majestic mountain tops, that contains a fear 250-years in the making. The location has been a stagecoach stop, a tavern and inn, lodging for soldiers during the Civil War, a Victorian mansion, an infirmary, and a place where many would come to die. It is the historic Lake House Hotel in Saylorsburg, PA, and in its current life, it is the Hotel of Horror.
Hotel of Horror is a modern-day haunted attraction featuring two separate haunted houses, both located within the formerly abandoned Lake House Hotel. If you are a lover of horror movies, haunted houses, the paranormal, or history, then this unique attraction is one you will not want to miss. Two haunted attractions inside one truly haunted hotel is more than horror buffs can take! It’s more of a scary overload than we even thought was possible!

The experience starts with the history of this location. Known as the Lake House Hotel, this building and site have been home to a variety of businesses or residences for nearly 250 years. Many of those occupants left a trail of spirits in its wake. The location started as a stagecoach stop in the late 1700’s, who’s foundation remains sheathing the walls of the deepest basement rooms under the Victorian mansion. After the stagecoach stop was destroyed, the site was built as a tavern and inn known as The Saylorsburg Hotel. In the later 1800’s the hotel was converted into a Victorian mansion, showcasing the remarkable architecture of the period. This mansion still exists inside the grand hotel built sometime between 1894 and 1900. It has operated as a hotel, a textile factory, a bar and restaurant, even a barber shop. But there has always been an air of death to this place.
Maybe that stink of death started back in the Civil War when the hotel housed a battalion of soldiers. Or maybe it was from the local area mine workers that were sent there when injured or killed to be “picked up” by their kin. It could be the period in 1918 when the hotel was set up as a temporary hospital to hold patients suffering and dying from the Spanish Influenza. Or maybe when the hotel became known as “the place to hang yourself” after the stock market crash of 1929 when Wall Street investors left New York to spend their final night on earth at the hotel before hanging from the rafters. A failed robbery attempt at the bar in the 1980’s left the owner at the time incapacitated, and as a result, the hotel closed for good. It appears more visitors have checked in to this hotel in Saylorsburg than have checked out.

The incredible history of the Lake House Hotel feeds dark energy into a sinister backdrop for the Hotel of Horror, the haunted attraction currently occupying the hotel. Since 1992, the Hotel of Horror has been growing, evolving, festering if you will, into one of the premier haunted houses in the country. In fact, Scary Overload recently named Hotel of Horror a Must-See attraction in the U.S. Your visit starts with the Hotel of Horror’s namesake haunted attraction. Journey through the hotel, through time, and discover the horrors that now inhabit the hotel. Unhinged characters appear to have been imprisoned in these walls for years, decades, even centuries. They are not happy to see you, either. Also view the hotel’s curated collection of macabre antiques, oddities, curiosities and morbid delights.
There is a second haunted attraction intertwined and breathing inside the hotel…Altered Nightmares. This event ritualizes chaos and insanity in a psychological funhouse of occult and carnival. Time travel through a vast labyrinth of decaying halls and abandoned rooms filled with an assortment of the bizarre. This part of the hotel is now inhabited by some questionable occupants straight out of the asylum!
Hotel of Horror is a destination event worth seeking. It is located in Saylorsburg, PA, an easy drive from Allentown, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Trenton or Philadelphia.
