While perusing the horror highlights for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, we noticed a panel scheduled for Thursday for the new Netflix series Black Summer, which was described as a “spin-off to SYFY’s hit show Z Nation.” Considering that we’re all big zombie fans around these parts, we were anxious to learn more, which is exactly what we did since the co-creator of both shows, Karl Schaefer, spilled the beans during the SDCC Z Nation panel hosted by our own Uncle Creepy!
Jaime King (Sin City, My Bloody Valentine) is the show’s star, and it will consist of eight hours, but not in the typical episodic structure. Instead, viewers can decide how much they want to digest – either small, bite-size chunks or the whole enchilada at once.
And don’t expect Z Nation‘s comedic touches… Black Summer aims to be much darker and more serious. As Schaefer explained, it takes place before the apocalypse “got weird.”
In other words, count on a lot more scares than laughs as well as a healthy helping of social commentary.
Here’s the rest of what we know; look for more soon!
The show is created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams and produced by The Asylum. Schaefer and Hyams will serve as co-showrunners.
Synopsis:
A mother (Jaime King) torn from her daughter embarks upon a harrowing journey, stopping at nothing to find her. Thrust alongside a small group of American refugees, she must brave a hostile new world and make brutal decisions during the most deadly summer of a zombie apocalypse.
