Bad news for those hoping for a third in the so-called David trilogy – it seems like Sir Ridley Scott is officially finished with the Alien franchise.
Three decades after kickstarting the sci-fi horror series with 1979’s classic Alien, Scott returned to the Alien universe with 2012’s Prometheus and its 2017 sequel Alien: Covenant. Although a pretty divisive pair in the overall Alien series, fans of the prequels have long hoped for a third movie to explore the fate of Katherine Waterston’s Chief Daniels, who was last seen being forced into statis sleep by Michael Fassbender’s malevolent android David.
However, in a new interview with ScreenRant, when asked if he had more directorial ambitions for the franchise, Scott replied with “not really,” adding:
“Where it’s going now, I think I’ve done enough, and I just hope it goes further.”
It should be noted that, in November of last year, The Hollywood Reporter, in an interview with Scott, stated that he is “developing a new Alien movie for [20th Century Studios] in the wake of Romulus’ success,” although this could very well be referring to a production role on Fede Alvarez’s upcoming Alien: Romulus sequel (Scott was on board as producer for Romulus) or something else outside of directorial duties.
While Scott may not return in a directorial capacity, that doesn’t mean the world of Alien is stopping – far from it, in fact, with Scott himself even noting that it the franchise is “spreading like wildfire.” There’s Noah Hawley’s upcoming Hulu/FX series Alien: Earth, for one, which Scott worked on as executive producer, as well as the aforementioned Alien: Romulus sequel.
There’s also the possibility of a new Alien Vs. Predator film on the horizon, with the recent reveal that Dan Trachtenberg’s Predator: Badlands will follow a Weyland-Yutani android (Elle Fanning) who finds an unlikely ally in a young Yautja warrior.
Although it will certainly be a shame if Scott decides not to return to the director’s chair for another Alien movie, the series is in good hands – with a $40 million IMAX total coming from its August 2024 release, Alien: Romulus currently stands as the highest-grossing horror film in the format, and stands only second behind Prometheus as the highest-grossing in the Alien franchise.
Whatever happens with Alien from here on out, we’ll of course be following with close interest.
