It was a monster weekend at the box office and, though a pair newcomers duked it out for the top spot globally, Final Destination Bloodlines held its own against two giant Hollywood blockbusters. So much so that, just after two weekends it is now ready to claim its place as the biggest Final Destination movie ever.

Directed by Adam Stein and Zach Lipovsky, Bloodlines pulled in another $19.6 million in its second frame domestically. That represents a 62% drop, which is sizable no doubt. That said, when we have monsters like Lilo & Stitch and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning both opening, that’s to be expected. When coupled with the $23 million the movie brought in overseas, its running total as of Monday morning sits at $182.2 million globally. Once the Memorial Day numbers are factored in, it will pass 2009’s The Final Destination ($187.3 million) to become the biggest entry in the series to date.

This comes after Bloodlines opened to a bigger-than-expected $51 million. And to think, this movie was originally going to go directly to HBO Max. Fortunately, Warner Bros. wised up and reversed course. The sixth entry in franchise centers on a college student who is plagued by a violent recurring nightmare and heads home to track down an old family member who might be able to break the cycle.
Memorial Day tends to be one of the bigger box office weekends in any given year and 2025 was no exception. Thanks to the blockbuster debuts for Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch ($145.5 million) and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning ($63 million), we’re looking at the biggest Memorial Day weekend ever for moviegoing. This is good news given that this year got off to a pretty rough start, with ticket sales initially lagging well behind this same point in 2024. The industry has since rebounded, with the summer looking incredibly promising thus far.
The biggest Memorial Day on record was 2013 when Fast & Furious 6 led a weekend that collectively grossed over $314 million. When all’s said and done, all of this year’s movies across the four-day weekend will bring in more than $322 million.
In holdover news aside from Final Destination, director Ryan Coogler’s R-rated sensation Sinners continued to hold incredibly well in its sixth weekend, adding another $8.7 million. That number will exceed $10 million after the Monday grosses are added in. That keeps it in the top five and brings its new global total to $339 million. If all continues to go well, it will pass Fifty Shades Darker ($381.3 million) to become one of the 50 biggest R-rated movies ever.

Circling back to Final Destination, the series has now earned nearly $850 million collectively since its inception in 2000. The series took a 14-year break after 2011’s Final Destination 5 and that break clearly served Warner Bros. well, as audiences were hungry for a new entry. Rest assured, we’re not going to have to wait another 14 years in light of how insanely well Bloodlines is performing.
Looking ahead, this upcoming weekend will see the release of Karate Kid: Legends, which aims to capitalize on the popularity of Netflix’s Cobra Kai. We’ve also got the latest horror flick from the Philippou brothers, Bring Her Back. Whether or not that one can break through like Talk to Me did in 2023 remains to be seen.
