The Surrender, the debut feature from filmmaker Julia Max, hits Shudder tomorrow, May 23, and we’re excited to bring you an exclusive clip of the supernatural horror before it hits the horror streamer.

Starring Colby Minifie (The Boys) and Kate Burton (Grey’s Anatomy),  The Surrender is loosely based on what Max and her mother went through after the death of her stepfather:

A fraught mother-daughter relationship is put to a terrifying test when the family patriarch dies, and the grieving mother hires a mysterious stranger to bring her husband back from the dead. As the bizarre and brutal resurrection spirals out of control, both women must confront their differences as they fight for their lives – and for each other.

Neil Sandilands, Vaughn Armstrong, Mia Ellis, Pete Ploszek, Chelsea Alden, Alaina Pollack, Riley Rose Critchlow, and Lola Prince Kelly also star alongside Minifie and Burton.

Speaking exclusively to FANGORIA, Max detailed more of how she brought The Surrender to life while pulling on her own experience:

“I always wanted The Surrender to feel as grounded in reality as possible. While the ritual eventually becomes violent, I wanted it to start off small and simple, seemingly harmless. In order to believe these characters and this world, I thought it was important to show how a series of small steps can ultimately lead people down a path to more dangerous choices they wouldn’t have otherwise made. I think we’ve all found ourselves on pivotal paths we didn’t realize we were taking, and in those moments the question is whether we have the courage to turn back or whether we keep moving forward, hoping for the best.”

The Surrender is executive produced by Susan Gelb, Adam Maffei, and Rob Massar, with producers Mia Chang, Lovell Holder, Robert J. Ulrich, Max, and Ian McDonald. The film had its premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, and is Max’s first feature-length film after directing the shorts Pieces of Me, Distortion, and The Colonies

In our exclusive clip, the aforementioned mysterious stranger performs a ritual involving a more unconventional bodily fluid that’s certainly different from the blood-splattered spells and sorcery we usually see in occult horror. Check it out below, as well as an exclusive BTS shot, and don’t miss The Surrender on Shudder tomorrow.
