We seem to be in something of a nature-bites-back creature feature renaissance at the moment (see also: Infested, Dangerous Animals, Anaconda and the just-announced Black Tides), with giant bats being the latest nightmare-inducing critter to hit screens in action-adventure horror Dark Jungle.
Per new details released by Variety today, Dark Jungle comes from Australian director Martin Wilson (Great White), and is produced by Neal Kingston and Michael Robertson (The Reef: Stalked, Black Water: Abyss) for Thrills & Spills, as well as Michael Boughen (Killer Elite).
Written by Boughen, Dark Jungle follows a team of elite mercenaries deep in the jungle, who embark on a rescue mission only to find themselves hunted by a swarm of giant, deadly bats.
Dark Jungle is also heading to Cannes, where Capture will be launching sales.
Here’s what Wilson has to say of the acquisition:
“I’m ecstatic to be teaming up with Capture on Dark Jungle and bringing a new apex predator to the Croisette. Their passion for bold, commercial storytelling is exactly what this film needs — and there’s no better place to launch than Cannes.”
Thrills & Spills add:
“We’re excited to be partnering with Capture Entertainment to bring this thrill-a-minute, high tension, and bold genre energy project to life, and keep our fans and new audiences around the world on the edge of their seats.”
While bats are standard fare in the background of Gothic and vampire horrors alike, they haven’t always had their time in the spotlight. Notable examples of past bat horrors include the Bela Lugosi-starring The Devil Bat from 1940, as well as 1979’s Nightwing and 1999’s Bats.
Look for Dark Jungle updates as they swoop in.
