With Sinners sinking its fangs into an incredible opening weekend and certifying itself as a bonafide horror hit, Ryan Coogler is thinking about his next project, an upcoming reboot of The X-Files for which Gillian Anderson herself may be on board for.
During an interview with Last Podcast on the Left that dropped over the weekend, Coogler revealed that the wheels were in motion, with The X-Files being “immediately next” on his roster:
“I’ve been excited about that for a long time and I’m fired up to get back to it […] Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really fucking scary.”
Anderson, who played FBI agent and paranormal investigator Dana Scully in 20th Century Fox Television and Fox’s original series from 1993 to 2001, and again from 2016 to 2018, has already expressed her interest in returning for the project, so hearing Coogler confirm that talks are officially happening is very exciting:
She’s incredible and fingers crossed there […] We’re going to try to make something really great, bro, and make something for the real ‘X-Files’ fans and maybe find some new ones.
Coogler’s involvement with a new version of The X-Files has been in discussion since 2o23, when series creator Chris Carter confirmed the Black Panther director was on board to remount the series with a more diverse cast. The new show will be part of Coogler’s deal with Walt Disney Television.
Whether or not Anderson’s partner in crime David Duchovny will return to his role as Agent Fox Mulder remains to be seen – previously, he’s expressed an openness to return, but on the condition that there would need to be “a point to do it and everybody wants to do it.” So, watch this space.
Look out for more on Coogler’s The X-Files as we get it.
