POSSESSION (1981).
Who is the scariest on this list of the top horror movies streaming this week? Well, as usual, Satan is big, but hungry blind extraterrestrial creatures, horny Lovecraftian monsters, ghouls, and unstable human beings are all doing their best to create chaos.
With audiences jonesing for the newest film in the X film trilogy, Maxxxine, it seems like the movies on this list are ready to show their influences, with great horror movie homages coming straight to your eyeballs. Enjoy, but you might want to duck.
Shudder has added the cult masterpiece Possession, directed by Andrzej Żuławski. Last week’s top movie, Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen, has many fantastic callbacks to the other movies in The Omen trilogy but also references Possession, which may have contributed to the film entering the top ten this week.
South Korean hit Exhuma has also come to screaming, er streaming, this week and jumps out of the grave and onto the list.

Late Night With the Devil (2023) – Streaming on Shudder
This supernatural found footage flick continues to top the charts and capture the hearts of scary movie fans. Starring genre fave David Dastmalchian, Laura Gordon, Ian Bliss, Fayssal Bazzi, Ingrid Torelli, Rhys Auteri, and Georgina Haig, Late Night With the Devil brings back the Satanic 1970s era in its polyester glory.
Tales of possession are big in the Found Footage subgenre, but Australian filmmakers Cameron Cairnes and Colin Cairnes have built the 70s era of murderous cults, and Satan worship into the story with a generous helping of ironic humor.
Late Night With the Devil is streaming on Shudder.
The First Omen (2024) – Streaming on Hulu
One of the centerpieces of Arkasha Stevenson’s glorious prequel to 70s horror hit The Omen is a scene that is clearly and admittedly a homage to Andrzej Żuławski Possession. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Possession has hit streaming at the time when The First Omen has or that both movies are in the top ten.
The film has a magnificent cast, much like the original films, including Nell Tiger Free
Tawfeek Barhom, Sônia Braga, Ralph Ineson, Bill Nighy, and Charles Dance. Every face in the film is a great one and many of the actors who play the smaller character roles are equally as amazing. If you missed this one in the theatres, you have the opportunity to enjoy it now at home. You can add viewings of the original Omen films or perhaps pair it with Possession. That sounds like a truly frightening experience, and we love that for you.
The First Omen is streaming on Hulu.
Pearl (2022) – Streaming on Prime
Pearl is the gorgeous Technicolor nightmare prequel to Ti West’s sensual slasher X. While it is a tragedy, it’s filled with so much terror and blood. Transporting the viewer to the desperate times of the 1918 Flu Pandemic and WWI and having those events be the least of the characters’ worries is incredible.
Mia Goth, David Corenswet, Tandi Wright, Matthew Sunderland, and Emma Jenkins-Purro star in this film, which, like many other films on the list, pays homage to classic Technicolor musicals and Douglas Sirk’s melodramas.
Talk to Me (2022) – Streaming on Hoopla
Our favorite Australian fright film about a deadly mummified hand and possession is still rocking the list, and with good reason. Watching the film at the SXSW Film Festival was a horrifying experience as the capacity crowd shrieked with delight.
One of the film’s greatest assets is the cast: Sophie Wilde, Alexandra Jensen, Joe Bird, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, and Zoe Terakes. The directors Danny Philippou and Michael Philippou, also known as YouTube’s RackaRacka, made many great choices, including the cast, who put in enormously warm and human performances that make you care right before the Philippous lower the doom on us all.
X (2022) – Streaming on Fubo
The first film in the X Film Trilogy is a 70s slasher without remorse or pity. I recently saw the film again in a theater, and I think audiences might have forgotten how vicious the kills are in Ti West’s X. Since the group of victims is a film crew trying to make a pornographic film, it is sexy, but don’t underestimate the gore and violence.
For every sexy scene, you get something equally as violent. Is that a comment on our society’s views of sex and violence in cinema? Probably!
Mia Goth does double duty as the fame-hungry Maxine and the love-hungry Pearl. Jenna Ortega, Martin Henderson, Brittany Snow, Owen Campbell, Stephen Ure, Scott Mescudi, and a lake-dwelling saurian do excellent work in the other roles in this slasher that electrifies a neglected subgenre.
A Quiet Place (2018) – Streaming on Paramount+
The release date of A Quiet Place: Day One will be here sooner than we all think, and it has lit a fire under streaming viewers to catch up on the films in the scary film series that they may have missed or to refresh their memories.
John Krasinski’s first film in the franchise, A Quiet Place, is again in the top ten because fans are really excited about the release of the newest film in the franchise, which is directed by Michael Sarnoski. If his name doesn’t ring a bell, check out his beautiful, non-horror film Pig, starring Nicolas Cage, and the eagerness will make a lot more sense to you.
Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, and John Krasinski star in this much quieter scary movie, which proves that you don’t have to be loud to frighten the audience.
A Quiet Place is streaming on Paramount+ and Fubo.
Possession (1981) – Streaming on Shudder
Andrzej Żuławski’s Possession is a film spoken of in reverent tones by horror film fans. It was not received well by critics at the time of its release and was declared a “video nasty,” but the enthusiasm and love for the film has only grown.
A tale of divorce and doppelgangers with elements of surrealism and one of the most fearsome scenes of madness that an actress has ever performed, it stands apart from most horror films. It’s great to see it on a top-ten list.
Starring Isabelle Adjani, Sam Neill, and Heinz Bennent, the film won Adjani a shared best actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for her performance in Possession and Quartet. The film took quite a toll on both lead actors, who gave unforgettable performances that seemed filled with an electrical current.
Possession is streaming on Shudder.
Exhuma (2023) – Streaming on Shudder
Not content with being one of the biggest box office hits in South Korea this year, Exhuma has also hit the streaming top ten with its narrative of a wealthy family trying to fight a curse placed on one of their children who inadvertently release ghouls on themselves.
This occult story stars Choi Min-sik, Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin, and Lee Do-hyun, and it goes for the gusto.
Exhuma is streaming on Shudder.
A Quiet Place Part II (2021) – Streaming on Hulu
Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, Noah Jupe, Djimon Hounsou, Cillian Murphy, and John Krasinski star in this sequel to the hit film where alien creatures have destroyed humanity except for the few who have learned to hide themselves and stay quiet.
The popularity of A Quiet Place Part II on streaming isn’t surprising, given that the upcoming prequel will be released on June 28. Fun fact: A Quiet Place Part II was shot on 35 mm film, just like the original film, which gives it a different look from many films that are currently shot on digital cameras.
A Quiet Place Part II is now streaming on Hulu and Paramount+.
Alien (1979) – Streaming on Hulu
One of the greatest horror films of the late 70s has returned to the top ten. Have you noticed that many franchise fright films that have new sequels or prequels coming out soon are popular again on streaming? We have, and we think it’s great. With Fede Alvarez’s highly anticipated Alien: Romulus coming in August, you can bet that fans will be watching the Ridley Scott original over and over again.
With a screenplay by Dan O’Bannon (The Return of the Living Dead) and a cast that includes some of the greatest character actors of the era: Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, Ian Holm, and Yaphet Kotto. Alien is a high water mark in film forever.
Alien is streaming on Hulu.
