It’s September, and that can only mean one thing: HAUNT SEASON IS HERE! Across the country, houses of horror are opening their doors for the season to terrify crowds. Here at Scary Overload, we’ve got a list of the SCARIEST haunts out there for you to enjoy this year.

ILLINOIS
Midnight Terror – Oak Lawn

Chicago’s own Midnight Terror focused on a very bad man named Sledge and his factory, under the influence of the wicked Malum entity. Things have progressed, and now the tales told within dig deeper into the underlying lore of Malum and the future of Black Oak Grove under its influence. The curse of Malum is still front and center, starting with Black Oak Grove: Hallows Eve. Halloween Night at Black Oak Grove is no ordinary celebration. The corruption of everything in the town is evident as you discover the monsters you feared as a child are all too real. Meanwhile, the old Black Oak Gear Factory has been taken over by Shadowtek. This high-tech research company has been conducting Experiment 1031 and tormenting involuntary test subjects. All under the watchful gaze of Malum. Finally, over in Rotten Hollow, the Hollow Keeper has been sighted as the old cemetery and that original, cursed black oak runs wild with evil. Throw in a midway of games, snacks, and entertainment, and this one can not be missed.

Fear Factory – Salt Lake City

This legend in the haunt industry returns for another year of grinding out Fear on the Factory floor. Located in the ruins of an old cement factory, Fear Factory continues the legend of a building soaked in blood. Accidents, disappearances, and broken bodies plagued the factory until its final closure. Now it’s up to you to show up and put in your shift on the Factory floor generating screams to keep the building’s bloodlust sated. Working your way through six buildings of the massive complex, you’ll experience every aspect of the old Portland Cement Works. Most recently, sightings of a man known only as Jim the Butcher have been reported, along with the wails of chainsaws in the night. What does this mean? Only you can find out!

Starting with their trademark hayride, where you’ll face horrors of every kind, you’re ejected from the wagons to try and escape on your own. The corn awaits and all the nightmares lurking inside. You’ll encounter other structures and environs as you try to find your way back to the entrance and flee from the fear, but details here are limited as so few have completed the task. Brighton Asylum has spent nearly 15 years terrifying New Jersey. Featuring three major attractions, this madhouse of mania will scare even the most jaded haunt fan. The Asylum itself contains all of the patients and staff trapped inside its cursed walls, hungering for new souls to play with. In SubCULTure, the underground tunnels are packed with the worst, mutated, and evil former patients who escaped and now live in eternal darkness, waiting for prey to enter. Finally, The Bleeding Grounds are the former staff quarters, closed off since 1952. The staff conducted their most twisted experiments here, leading to the bloody name. Pennhurst Asylum Haunted House – Spring City

What if a haunted attraction was actually haunted? Find out at Pennhurst Asylum! These historic grounds are so pervasively occupied by spirits that paranormal investigations are offered year-round. We’re concerned about the attractions, though, and we’ve got four of them. Traveling through the complex, we have the Asylum itself. Remnants of the twisted staff still lurk inside, seeking to continue the legacy of pain. From there, we move to The Pennhurst Tunnels. Once a way to discard bodies unseen, now they are infested with the worst evil you can expect in the underground dark. Following the path of the corpses, we find ourselves in The Morgue, where the undead and those who conducted evil experiments on them are waiting to remind us that death waits for everyone. Finally, The Catacombs await only the bravest souls. Are you brave enough to wander the halls of an institution so haunted it’s been featured on paranormal shows multiple times?

In Palmer, MA, we have the 13th World Fright Park. An expansive collection of four attractions, two bars, a midway, and food offerings, this is a one-stop haunt experience to scratch every itch a scare addict could want. Meanwhile, Rhode Island offers the original 13th World attraction, a nature trail through your darkest fears. They’ve featured a new haunt every year for 23 years, and this year is no different. New to the list this year but not new to the haunt game, Hex House has been scaring Tulsa for years. Based on a local crime in the 1940s and the urban legends surrounding the now-destroyed house it all happened in, Hex House offers three attractions in one location. Starting it off, Hex House itself, in all of its gory wonder. Butchers and magic all combine to make a horrific journey for all who enter. Next is The Experiment, harking back to the Cold War era when the former Soviet Union conducted twisted experiments to try and find an edge on their enemies in the West. Then we have Haunted Overdrive, an automotive nightmare designed to play on your fears as you try to escape with your life. Are you ready to be Hexed?

The Dent Schoolhouse – Cincinnati

The Dent Schoolhouse is a real schoolhouse opened originally in 1894. The legend, however, started later in the 1940’s. By the time the school closed forever in 1955, several students were dead and the suspected killer, janitor Charlie McFree, was missing. He was never found, but the Dent Schoolhouse continues his legend with a terrifying haunted attraction that covers all floors and the basement of the historic building. You’ll experience the legend first-hand, as Charlie returns for more blood. Meanwhile, the Monster Midway is packed with seasonal fun, food, merch, and even a haunted house museum! They also offer a number of escape room experiences themed to the lore of the haunt if you don’t get enough from the haunt itself. Come out to Cincinnati and face Ol’ Charlie!

FLORIDA
Fright Nights – West Palm Beach

Another new addition to the list and our first Florida haunt, Fright Nights fills the South Florida Fairgrounds with screams every year, and it’s bigger than ever this season. Featuring four full haunts and two separate, themed scare zones, Fright Nights will change the bright and festive Miami vibe to a blood drenched supermarket of nightmares. First off, we have Watery Grave. Set in a port town that has fallen under a terrible curse, the seaside locale is flooded with evil. A plague, pirates, even the undead are ravaging the once quiet and wealthy village. Taking shelter in the governor’s mansion won’t help, as the family within has gone mad. Next we have The Autumn Of Terror Returns, where all the scary stories from Halloweens past come to life. All your favorite monsters come to life along with possessed trick or treaters. Can you make it to All Saint’s Day? After that, you may want a party, and we’ve got one: Nuclear Beats: Frenzy In The Fallout. The bad news is that the local nuclear power plant leaked into this futuristic rave and now the attendees are frenzied mutants splitting into warring factions and attacking everyone they meet while the beats go on. Leave your glow necklaces at home, they won’t help you here. Finally, Project X, which is…well, we don’t know. This final haunt won’t be revealed until October 5th. What waits inside? Come to Fright Nights and find out!

COLORADO
Fear Complex – Colorado Springs

A legend in the Colorado haunt scene, Fear Complex makes its debut on this list for 2025. There are four sections to this massive haunt, supplying a variety of nightmares to fill your dreams. The Sanitarium is first, with deranged patients and twisted staff looking to make you a permanent resident within its halls. Next is the Haunted Mines, a series of abandoned mine tunnels. Facing cave monsters and crumbling walls, you even wind up on a rickety elevator ride to the depths. If you escape to the surface, you’ll find yourself in the Sinister Manor, a decrepit mansion in a swamp that you explore, finding out what lurks within and without. To wrap things up, we shift tone dramatically with the 3-D Carnival, where you don special glasses to make reality twist and warp. You’ll face down killer clowns and chainsaw wielding maniacs while trying to keep your sanity. This onslaught of environments doesn’t give you a moment to gather your wits.
