The MUST-SEE Attractions in America
It’s that time of year again, and we couldn’t be more ready! Halloween is coming! This season not only commands your attention, but demands your screams! We’ve put our heads together over here at Scary Overload to again bring you the MUST-SEE attractions for 2019!
Editor’s Note: We’ve put them in no particular order, as these haunts are all worthy of a number one spot. Enjoy!
Valley of Fear — Feasterville, Pennsylvania
The Valley of Fear in Feasterville PA. is known as ‘America’s most horrifying woods’, and with that…you are already off to a great start! Offering four main attractions including The Original Haunted Hayride, Miles Manor, Scarytales, and Operation Z Escape, there are multiple parts of the experience to enjoy. The atmosphere is one of the best features, out in the middle of the woods in the dark, what is scarier than that? Not to mention the music, food and fun that you can enjoy after you endure the haunt, where apple cider and funnel cake fill the air. You can also choose which attraction you want to go to first, which allows you to pick the shortest lines and navigate the park swiftly. The Valley of Fear offers more than just their attractions, they have entertainment and special events like their 80’s Horror Icon night! This scream park is definitely packed with frights and fun. Don’t miss this one if you love the traditional hayride experience!
The Haunted Hotel — Beaumont, Texas
Check into the famous Haunted Hotel in Beaumont, TX. This proud family-run attraction has operated for 30 years and is still terrifying Southeast Texas. The Haunted Hotel continues to add new scares and haunting elements each year in an attempt to scare us out of our minds! Our only fear is…if we check In we may never check out. When on-site, be sure to engage in conversation with their signature characters that entertain the crowds of folks outside. These characters are celebrities of sorts and are well-known to the surrounding area! Make sure you tell them “Large Marge” from Scary Overload sent ya!
Thirteenth Hour — Indianapolis, Indiana
Not many haunts will tackle the realistically scary subject of religion. Thirteenth Hour does this, and we couldn’t be more pleased. Their first haunt, Cathedral of Souls will have you praying: You’ll need a ticket to get in…and a priest to get out! Stories of missing people, and controversial ceremonies set the tone for a twisted religious experience of sorts. And if you are a Halloween traditionalist, we’ve heard you will love one of the new additions for 2019: Reaper’s Hollow! Built within it is a pumpkin patch, and if that doesn’t scream HALLOWEEN, we don’t know what does! This haunt comes equipped with an immersive cemetery scene, tombstones, and crypts! You’ll want to take it all in…but remain on-guard! You never know what lost souls will be lurking around! This Halloween season also brings yet another ALL-NEW attraction: Mine No. 13! Thirteenth Hour Indy is a MUST-SEE attraction in Indianapolis, and for a good cause! Their concessions area is charity-run! Come on out for an evening of FRIGHTS and FUN! Get scared, work-up an appetite, grab a snack and give back!
Haunted Hollow — Omaha, Nebraska
Haunted Hollow has quickly become one of Nebraska’s FAVORITE Halloween attractions! They offer you the chance to investigate an actual hotbed of otherworldly activity! Paranormally speaking, we were super creeped out! There are videos online with mediums that SWEAR the activity is real. That was enough for us to ensure that we were sufficiently creeped out before we even arrived! When you choose Haunted Hollow, you get one of the top-rated scream parks in Nebraska with frightening attractions that will scare and delight crowds! The even have live entertainment. Monsters and music as they say! With 7 acres of frights and fun, you’re headed for an intense evening filled with scares and laughs! However, when you are leaving Haunted Hollow, just whisper “the fear stays here”. You wouldn’t want one of their ghostly spirits to follow you home!
DarkSide Haunted Adventure — Ixonia, Wisconsin
The DarkSide Haunted Adventure has some buzz surrounding it as it is voted Wisconsin’s scariest haunt year after year! DarkSide has a hauntingly generous 7 haunted houses featuring the Grimm Reaper Railway! The DarkSide is made up of over 40 acres of FRIGHT, a midway area with light shows, and multiple concessions options! So if being scared makes you hungry, you are ALL SET! The DarkSide is like a trip into a Halloween horror story. Something that they did wonderfully was making us feel like we were in another world. Welcome to the DarkSide, they may not have had cookies…but we were just as thrilled to have been there for an evening of SCREAMS!
Abandoned Acres — Sparta, Michigan
Abandoned Acres Farm is located on Fruit Ridge Ave only 10 minutes north of Grand Rapids. The 100 year-old farm encompasses over 40 acres of rolling landscape including foreboding woods, surreal creeks, fruit orchards, and more. Abandoned Acres Farm is a unique, haunting experience so prepare to be scared! Their Corn Maze is cut through a Virginia heirloom bloody butcher corn that towers overs 16 foot tall with blood red ears of corn hanging throughout. This is no ordinary corn field! Abandoned’s Big Top attraction sits on the oldest part of the farm that has been overgrown for years. Every fall the circus comes back to life bringing with it winding trails infested with demonic clowns whose only mission is to raise the circus of the dead by the fuel of your fear and sound of your screams! We had an excellent time while on the Farm! We can’t wait to make it back to see Old Eli.
Ravenwood Haunted Farm – Boston, MA
Experience fear, fun, laughter, and excitement as you journey through our haunted woods and discover the secrets earthed in Ravenwood’s ominous cornfield. Immerse yourself in the macabre grounds of Ravenwood Estates. This haunted experience is unlike any other because of the style of the imagery and sets. Give them a follow on Facebook for a real, Edgar Alan Poe-vintage creepy treat! Ravenwood Haunted Farm is made up of on 157 acres of fear on Chris’ Farm Stand in Haverhill, Massachusetts. Ravenwood Haunted Farm is located 45 minutes north of Boston. Which is easily accessible from I-95, I-93, and I-495. They also offer FREE parking on-site. Which is HUGE when it comes to experiences like this one. Spend an evening out and make some haunting memories at Ravenwood Haunted Farm this Fall!
Hudson Horrors – Rye, New York
The NEWEST haunted event to hit the Hudson River area in New York will for sure get your blood pumping! This hour-long experience immerses you in THREE unique haunt experiences – Toy Factory, Haunted Hospital and Haunted Mansion. Hudson Horrors uses elements of live theatre and special effects to create physically, emotionally and psychologically intense, horrifying situations to take a stroll through. Using a blend of haunting story, a musical score, detailed scenes, scents, Hollywood style makeup FX, climate controlled environments, and professional actors, Hudson Horrors creates a truly immersive, interactive, and HAUNTING experience. Hudson Horrors is located within Playland Park in Westchester County of New York. This brand new attraction “visits” Rye Playland this Halloween season. Give them a follow on social media at @HudsonHorrors to keep up with the latest information. Hudson Horrors is a MUST-SEE if you think your heart can take it! 6 Fears presents: Hell’s Bar Dam – Guild, Tennessee
We can’t have a list of “must see” attractions without including a NEW haunted house event located at a REAL haunted location. Travel down to Guild, TN (just outside of Chattanooga) to the famously haunted, Hale’s Bar Dam! Here you’ll find a brand spanking new event called: 6 Fears – Hell’s Bar Dam. Clever, right? This unique event features four terrifying haunted attractions and/or paranormal experiences housed inside the PROVEN haunted facilities at Hale’s Bar Dam. If you’re into real spooks and scares…do NOT miss this event. Just maybe take some good ole burning sage for the parking lot when you are about to head home. You wouldn’t want any of the spirits hitching a ride and following you home!
Legends of Fear – Shelton, CT
As Halloween lovers, the team behind Legends of Fear is completely DEADicated to your family’s scare experience and haunted entertainment! This passionate team work all year for your FEAR! The farm is completely transformed and buildings are trimmed with orange lights, special effects, and Halloween decor. The security staff, parking attendants, greeters, ticket booth cashiers, shop clerks, and wagon loaders will assist you in any way possible. Everyone genuinely seemed to be in the Halloween spirit, which really added to the entire experience! Enjoy FIVE Haunted Attractions: the Haunted Hayride and The Hallow (featuring The Fun House of Fear, Melon Head Revenge, Hemlock Manor Mortuary, Pine Hills Parish, and the Dark Harvest), for a great night of fright and delight!
Fear Factory 501 – Jacksonville, Arkansas
This Halloween, step through the doors of the infamous Fear Factory 501 in Jacksonville, AR for a frightful evening you won’t soon forget! Known as the place where darkness never sleeps, Fear Factory 501 offers numerous attractions that will terrify even the most seasoned horror enthusiast! From the grotesque Torture Chamber to the adrenaline-pumping “Escape Room”, our undead hosts will provide you with an otherworldly Halloween experience. The screams carried through the air, and added to the anticipation of the evening. We much enjoyed our time at Fear Factory 501! This is a must-see this season for good reason!
Nightmare’s Gate – Douglasville, Georgia
Nestled just outside of Atlanta, GA is a terrifying encounter with fear, monsters, and all sorts of unfathomable nightmares. If you come across faint, distant screams in Georgia, you’re probably close to Nightmare’s Gate Haunted House. Recently moved to a new location, Nightmare’s Gate takes pride in giving their guests bad dreams and wet undies…or…was that just us? Hop on down to Douglasville, GA for a nightmare you won’t soon forget. Clean-up on aisle 666!
Zombie Toxin – Junction City, Kansas
Kansas: There’s no place like home, there’s no place like home, there’s no place like…HAUNT! Kansas is home to beautiful vistas of farmland, tasty Barbecue, and apparently one of the scariest haunted houses you could ever find in the Midwest! About an hour West of Kansas City, in the quaint little town of Junction City is where you’ll find bloody butchers, frightening clowns, and some of the best scares we’ve ever had! We’ll say this, if you ever find yourself traveling West on I-70 and happen to drive through Junction City, do yourself a favor and stop in at Zombie Toxin. You won’t regret it…but no matter what they say, do NOT let them inject you with anything. Or the only travel snacks you’ll be eating are other human brains!
