It has been almost a year since we lost a real one, the distinguished lover of big-bottoms, White Claws, and brunches, Mr. Scott Wampler. As the surviving half of The Kingcast team, it has fallen to me to make sure we don’t forget this cranky heaux and make his deathiversary a celebration instead of a bummer.
The good folks at Neon and the Alamo Drafthouse are pitching in to help with an early screening of Mike Flanagan’s Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck that will be held in the Scott Wampler Memorial Theater at the Alamo Drafthouse S. Lamar in Austin, TX Saturday, June 1st at 5pm Central Time.
The Life of Chuck is the third Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, although this one treads into some different territory. King’s novella is introspective and life-affirming, more in line with Stand By Me and The Shawshank Redemption than, say, Cujo or The Shining.
The less you know about the movie going in the better, but I will say it is the most happy movie set against the backdrop of a dying world that I’ve ever personally seen and bolstered by an absolutely killer cast. Tom Hiddleston, Mark Hamill, Mia Sara, Karen Gillan, Matthew Lillard, Kate Siegel, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Heather Langenkamp, Carl Lumbly, and Jacob Tremblay, to name a few. Plus a couple of jokers named Scott Wampler and Eric Vespe who pop up a couple times to steal the limelight from the famous people.
I’ll be there moderating an interview with Mike Flanagan himself as he beams in from some exotic location using the magic of modern day technology. The Kingcast will also have a live recording of the show before the movie and afterwards the Highball will host a swing dance party.
I’m told everyone in attendance gets a Press Room commemorative The Life of Chuck ticket. I’m not 100% sure what that means, but it sounds fancy.

I may be biased, but the movie is wonderful and I can’t think of a better way to honor Scott’s memory than by watching this film, all about the fragility of life and the massive impact a single person can have on the world. I hope to see many of you there!
