XYZ Films has unveiled a new trailer for David Midell’s upcoming exorcism horror The Ritual, ahead of its June 6 theatrical release.
Starring Dan Stevens (Cuckoo, Abigail, A24’s upcoming gonzo action horror Onslaught) and the one and only Al Pacino, The Ritual is based on the real-life case of Anna Ecklund aka Emma Schmidt, an American possession said to have inspired William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist.
“The Ritual follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.”
Also starring in The Ritual are Twilight alum Ashley Greene, Ashley Cowan (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina), and Patricia Heaton (Everybody Loves Raymond).
Pacino plays the role of Father Theophilus Riesinger, a friar and priest who performed exorcisms across the United States in the 1900s.
The Ritual was co-written by Midell and Enrico Natale. Natale serves as a producer alongside Andrew Stevens and Mitchell Welch.
