Coinciding nicely with the release of the long-awaited sequel 28 Years Later, hitting theaters on June 20, Danny Boyle’s post-apocalyptic horror 28 Days Later is finally getting the physical release treatment it deserves from Sony.
The 4K UHD Limited Edition SteelBook release of 28 Days Later is currently only available for pre-order in the UK via Zavvi or HMV, so fans outside of the UK make sure to keep your eyes peeled.
Released in 2002, 28 Days Later marked the breakout role of now-Oscar winner Cillian Murphy as bicycle courier Jim, who wakes up from a coma only to find the city of London (and the rest of the UK) ravaged by a deadly rage virus that has turned most of the population into feral zombie-like beasts.
For a long time, 28 Days Later was scarcely available on Digital or physical media (legally, at least), so news of a 4K release will come as music to horror fans’ ears. It does, however, pose some questions – given that 28 Days Later was shot on standard definition video (aside from the ending sequence, which was shot in 35mm), a 4K restoration can really only do so much. Nevertheless, it’s still exciting to have this movie in a physical media format and not have to pay scalper’s prices on eBay.
Boyle’s 28 Years Later, written by Alex Garland, stars Ralph Fiennes, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Jack O’Connell and Erin Kellyman, and marks the start of a brand new trilogy. Murphy is also set to return to his role as Jim, as well coming onboard as executive producer, but not in 28 Years Later.
As previously reported, the second movie into the trilogy, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, is directed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman), and will follow six months after 28 Years Later. Boyle is also onboard to direct the third as-of-now untitled movie.
