Body horror master David Cronenberg’s latest feature, The Shrouds, hits theaters nationwide on April 25 via Sideshow and Janus Films, with those in New York and Los Angeles able to catch it a few days earlier on April 18.
Starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce and Sandrine Holt, The Shrouds is described as “both a profoundly personal reckoning with grief and a descent into noir-tinged dystopia.”
In The Shrouds:
In an eerie, deceptively placid near-future, a techno-entrepreneur named Karsh (Cassel) has developed a new software that will allow the bereaved to bear witness to the gradual decay of loved ones dead and buried in the earth.
While Karsh is still reeling from the loss of his wife (Kruger) from cancer—and falling into a peculiar sexual relationship with his wife’s sister (also Kruger)—a spate of vandalized graves utilizing his “shroud” technology begins to put his enterprise at risk, leading him to uncover a potentially vast conspiracy.
Interestingly, following its premiere at Cannes Film Festival, The Shrouds was almost snapped up by Netflix where it would’ve been made into a series.
Cronenberg, who wrote The Shrouds after the passing of his wife, expanded on the themes of the film previously:
“If you’re an atheist like I am and you don’t believe in an afterlife then the death of someone is meaningless… It’s very difficult for people to live with no meaning. One way that you can create meaning when perhaps there isn’t any, is to come up with a theory, a conspiracy, that explains why a person died … Whatever the conspiracy is, it gives you a sense of knowledge and power that you know something that other people don’t know. It empowers you. These very stupid journalists who did not see this, there was a purpose to it. You might think it doesn’t work is one thing, but to not notice it to me is a problem as a filmmaker.”
