Ahead of playing at this year’s SXSW Festival, a new trailer has just veen revealed for Flying Lotus’ trippy horror adventure Ash. Starring Eiza González and Aaron Paul, the new film opens in theaters on March 21, and will arrive on Shudder sometime later this year.
The trippy trailer features González in what seems like a waking nightmare, isolated after a mysterious disaster kills the rest of her crewmates on an unknown mission. The film’s full synopsis is as follows:
On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (Eiza González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Aaron Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive.
His first full-length feature since 2017’s Kuso, and first project since his segment in V/H/S/99 in 2022, Ash is a passion project for Lotus, which he described to Hypebeast Magazine as being totally unique from anything he’s done before:
It’s completely different. With Kuso, I did so much of that at my house and a lot of it was me begging homies to do stuff, whereas Ash was a real production. Everything was really legit. Going to an office, being in meetings every day with fluorescent lights. It was great working with professionals who have crazy experience in the industry. People go to New Zealand to shoot sci-fi and fantasy movies, so I was among all these people who worked on The Lord of the Rings and other Peter Jackson and James Cameron stuff.
Also starring Iko Uwais, Kate Elliott, Beulah Koale, and Flying Lotus himself, Ash premieres in theaters on March 21. Check out the new trailer below:
