Barbarian director Zach Cregger has found his next movie, and it’s certainly a doozy. The Hollywood Reporter writes that he’ll helm a new reboot of Resident Evil, based on the video game series of the same name, with a bidding war igniting over what studio will land the exciting new project.
The new reboot will be produced by Constantin Film, the same studio behind the original film series starring Milla Jovovich, and THR says that four studios are competing to land the film, including Warner Bros. and Netflix. No details about the plot of the film or planned cast have been announced.
Cregger will balance the new video game project, co-produced by PlayStation Productions, with his upcoming project Weapons, starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, which has yet to set a release date. The news also comes just before his first major outing as a producer, the sci-fi dating horror flick Companion, starring Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher, hits theaters on January 31. The Resident Evil reboot, according to THR, will be a “revamp that will take the title to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games, which date back to 1996.”
The original Resident Evil film adaptation premiered in 2002 starring Jovovich and directed by Paul W. S. Anderson, and went on to spawn five sequels, plus a soft reboot that premiered in 2021. The franchise has grossed a cumulative $1.2 billion globally in the last twenty three years.
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil reboot has not set a release date. Stay tuned for FANGORIA for more news on this title and more.
