THE SUBSTANCE Sweeps The Oscar Nominations With Best Picture And Directing Nods

The nominees for the 97th Academy Awards are in, with horror faring better than it has in years. Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance has scored five nominations, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu four, with Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus nabbing a nom for Visual Effects.

The Substance is up for Best Picture, Writing (Original Screenplay) and Makeup and Hairstyling, with Fargeat for Directing and star Demi Moore up for Best Actress. Moore’s win at the Golden Globes earlier this year bodes particularly well for her odds in taking home one of the biggest awards of the night.

Eggers’ Gothic epic Nosferatu is up for Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design and Makeup and Hairstyling.

As us horror fans know all too well, horror is rarely recognized by the Academy (hence why we have our own FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards to celebrate the deserving winners in the genre each year!), so it’s refreshing to see a film like The Substance do so well.

Fargeat’s nod for Best Director feels particularly important, as only eight women total have ever been nominated for the award in almost 100 years of the Oscars.

The Oscars airs on March 2, so keep your fingers crossed for some horror wins. Read on for the full list of nominees:
