Developer ITEM42 (the creator behind the classical mythology-inspired co-op shooter PERISH) have announced a new single-player FPS in DEFICIT, which is currently in development on PC via Steam. Described as having an emphasis on “chaotic close-quarters combat,” DEFICIT trades in tomb raiding for a little sci-fi that harkens to something out of Event Horizon.
DEFICIT casts you as a corporate espionage freelancer for hire. Your latest assignment from one known only as [The Client] has you stealing the reality-shifting Interpolator from the sprawling research labs of Project Sidereal. Project Sidereal is housed within Hadrian’s Wall, a maze of concrete warrens and liminal installations policed by the seasoned officers of the Oversight Taskforce. The Interpolator allows you to open wormholes to find your way around obstacles, but in the process will have you entering “the strangest frontiers of reality.”
Apart from bending reality, you’ll need to deal with and avoid the Oversight Officers, the various mechanoids found in Hadrian’s Wall, as well as just whatever comes out of the wormholes. Luckily, you do have some weapons at your disposal, though as mentioned, the emphasis on close-quarters combat will force your hand. Things such as hammers, screwdrivers and bricks are your main go-to, though you will have access to pistols and SMGs at certain points.
No release date has been announced as of yet.
