Despite the fact that their return to the franchise has been highly anticipated, the I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot won’t be focused on Ray and Julie. Returning star Freddie Prinze Jr., who will appear in the Jennifer Kaytin Robinson-directed film alongside his original co-star Jennifer Love Hewitt, confirmed on the Scale Talk Podcast With David Miniatures that the film won’t be focused on their characters, but rather weaves them in with the new generation of stars.
While many fans are excited to see what’s happened to Ray and Julie in interim since we last saw them, Prinze explained that while Robinson took “such good care” of he and Hewitt’s characters, that “they’re not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination”:
“She made them such a powerful pushing forward of the other cast. It’s not like, ‘Oh, here’s the Ray and Julie movie that we deserve.’ That doesn’t even make sense. That guy’s dead. So it has to be the new generation. And the way she sort of laces us in there with them is just beautifully done. The script is wonderfully written.”
The reboot only just recently began filming, and adds several new faces to the slasher franchise, including Jonah Hauer-King, Madelyn Cline, Alexander Chavez, Lola Tung, Tyriq Withers, and Chase Sui Wonders. Plot details for the reboot are still under wraps, though some connection to the original and its hook-handed killer is obvious.
The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is set to be directed by Do Revenge helmer Robinson, from a script co-written by her and Sam Lansky. It’s the second attempt to bring the franchise back to life for a modern audience, after the failed Prime Video series that only lasted a single season and diverged from the original novel and the cult films.
The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot will premiere on July 18, 2025. You can check out the full interview with Prinze down below:
