The wait is nearly over, Nosferatu flies into theaters Christmas Day, but in the meantime, we have Nosferatu cast Lily-Rose Depp and Nicholas Hoult here to chat about their new gothic romance. Count Orlok’s look has been kept tightly under wraps, with no shortage of fan-made art guessing at what may be in store. Nosferatu director Robert Eggers shared that he wanted to make vampires “scary” again.
Bill Skarsgård underwent vocal training specifically for this role, and co-star Nicholas Hoult says “It doesn’t sound at all like Bill, but it also is so terrifying and rooted in what it would be to be a two-hundred-year-old corpse and how that is to breathe, etc.”
Lily-Rose Depp calls Skarsgård’s Count Orlock voice “Incredible and so transportive,” adding, “I really could see the link between the voice and the physical makeup. The kind of creature that this voice belonged to. Bill is phenomenal in this movie He’s really a very special performer.”
Vampire tales have a history of being very sexy, and when Skarsgård was announced as the title monster, the internet was ablaze was thirsty speculation. Depp explains, “The first vampire tales and myths were written by people who really believed that they existed. I think there wasn’t a lot of sexiness there, actually.”
Hoult quips, “Typical humans to then be like, ‘oh let’s make it a little saucy.’” Depp goes on: “I think with this Nosferatu, [Robert Eggers] was venturing to kind of veer from that and make it as blood-curdlingly terrifying as possible.” Soon enough, you’ll get to see this blood-curdling rendition for yourselves.
