Coralie Fargeat’s satirical body horror The Substance has nabbed five nominations for next year’s 82nd Golden Globe Awards, including Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

Stars Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley have also been nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture respectively.

Fargeat is also up for Best Director, and the film is also up for Best Screenplay (which it won at Cannes).

In The Substance:

Demi Moore gives a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). She is then drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug: THE SUBSTANCE.

All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. A perfect balance. What could go wrong?

The horror has been a huge hit both critically and financially, racking up a worldwide total of $51.5 million off the back of its $17 million budget.

Other horror movies nominated are Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus and Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement and Hugh Grant for Heretic in Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.

Head over to Variety for a full rundown of nominations. The 82nd Golden Globes is set to air live from the Beverly Hilton on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET.
