For those who want to see that finale in all its gory glory, fear not, as Coralie Fargeat’s smash hit body horror The Substance is getting a 4K UHD and Blu-ray release early next year via MUBI.
Starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, The Substance has been the horror on everybody’s lips in 2024 following its award-winning premiere at Cannes earlier this year.
In The Substance:
Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself? You. Only better in every way. You’ve got to try this product: The Substance. It changed my life. Demi Moore gives a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Quaid). She is then drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug: THE SUBSTANCE.
All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. A perfect balance. What could go wrong?
The satirical body horror has been a huge hit both critically and financially, racking up a worldwide total of $51.5 million off the back of its $17 million budget.
The Substance is firmly on the top of the Best Of lists for many horror fans, and also non-horror fans who had their interest piqued by the effective marketing, and left nauseous after the film’s Yuzna-esque finale and its 30,000 gallons of fake blood.
Special features for the 4K are yet to be announced.
