Here’s Our First Look At Guillermo Del Toro’s Gothic Horror

It’s been a good long time since we heard anything about Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, but Vanity Fair have finally quenched our curiosity with a first-look BTS image of the film in all its Gothic glory.

Starring Oscar Isaac, Mia Goth, Christoph Walz and Jacob Elordi as the monster, Frankenstein is based on Mary Shelley’s seminal 1818 novel, and will be released onto Netflix at an as-of-now unconfirmed date.

Del Toro has also confirmed via his Bluesky account that Frankenstein will also have a theatrical run.

Frankenstein has been a long-term dream of del Toro’s, with the auteur director first expressing his interest in directing a retelling back in 2007. Since then the project has gone through many iterations, including at one point having Andrew Garfield in Elordi’s role.

In today’s first look image from Vanity Fair, we get a good look at the laboratory where Isaac’s Victor Frankenstein (presumably the figure with his back to us below) will bring Elordi’s monster to life. VF reveal that much of the film, including this scene, were shot “in the remnants of once-great structures”. Del Toro adds:

“Gothic romance was born partially out of the fascination with ruins […] Sometimes they’re more beautiful than the building complete because it’s the clash of creation and destruction.”

With Frankenstein, Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man, James Wan’s upcoming Creature from the Black Lagoon, and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride! it’s safe to say we’re in a Universal Monsters renaissance.

More on Frankenstein as we get it!
