We recently got a bit of unexpected news as it came to light that Sony Pictures is working on a remake of the ‘90s cult classic horror/comedy Idle Hands, with Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) and Billy Bryk (Hell of a Summer) set to write – and possibly direct – this new take on the film. Much remains uncertain for the time being but, to say the least of it, this was a surprise. So, how does Devon Sawa, the star of the original film, feel about it? It seems the actor has nothing but well wishes for the two young filmmakers shepherding the project.
Sawa didn’t seem to know in advance that this was coming and reacted to the news in real time on social media. Taking to Twitter, the star of Final Destination and Chucky wished luck upon Wolfhard and Bryk, who are tackling the project for Sony Pictures alongside Jason Reitman (Ghostbusters: Afterlife), who is producing the film.
“I mean if anyone’s gonna do it, better be them two fine lads. Good luck fellas,” Sawa said on Twitter in response to the news.
It was a classy move on Sawa’s part, for my money. Oftentimes, when news of a remake breaks, not only can fans be a bit crusty and precious about it, but filmmakers can also be less than kind about the projects. Not that Sony or anyone involved needs Sawa on board to make this happen, but it’s surely nice for the filmmakers to not have him shouting, “It stinks!” from the rooftops like Jay Sherman in The Critic.
Directed by Rodman Flender, Idle Hands starred Sawa, who was a rising star at the time, and Seth Green, who was also coming up in Hollywood. It also featured Jessica Alba in one of her earliest roles, along with the legend known as Vivica A. Fox. Rather notably, the film was not a success in its day, as it was largely rejected by critics and flamed out at the box office. Yet, it found an audience in the years that followed, with Scream Factory giving it a collector’s edition Blu-ray release several years back. For those who may need a refresher, in the film…
“Anton Tobias (Devon Sawa) is a channel-surfing, junk-food-munching, couch-potato burn-out who can’t control the murderous impulses of his recently possessed hand. With the help of his zombiefied buddies, Mick (Seth Green) and Pnub (Elden Henson), Anton’s got to stop the rampaging devil appendage before it takes total control of his life and ruins any chance he has with class hottie Molly (Jessica Alba).”
Sawa, meanwhile, is staying busy. Aside from being killed multiple times on Chucky, he most recently starred in the creature feature Consumed, which was released earlier this year. The actor is also set to star in Heart Eyes alongside Jordana Brewster, which is on deck for a 2025 release.
