What would you do for help in an apocalypse? What help is there in a desolate world where all’s been ruined? Would you band together and do the best you can to create a community, or would you sacrifice a young woman to an evil entity just to ensure your own health and safety? Well, the stars of Azrael are certainly up for the latter, as FANGORIA is excited to debut an exclusive clip from the upcoming survival thriller, hitting theaters today.
The new clip puts star Samara Weaving at the center of a demonic ritual, conducted by a camp of survivors trying to summon an ancient evil from the wilderness. Tied to a chair, Weaving’s Azrael can do nothing but watch as the cultists chant — or rhythmically breathe, rather — and an unknowable, horrifying creature emerges from between the trees. What it plans to do with her is unknown, as the clip cuts off just as Azrael begins to struggle against her bindings as the thing roars in pleasure at the sight of her blood.
Azrael puts a unique twist on the survival thriller to amp up the stakes, in a world where words are considered to be sinful, no one speaks in order to remain clean in a ruined world. Yes, you heard me right — not a single word is spoken over the course of the film, leaving everything up the audience’s interpretation as it lets actions speak louder than words while Azrael tries her hardest to escape those who want her dead. (Unless you count screaming, but that’s always a given for horror anyway, dialogue or no.)
The film comes from the mind of Simon Barrett, who horror fans might recognize as the writer of The Guest and multiple segments in the popular V/H/S franchise on Shudder. E.L. Katz directs the film, which was shot in Estonia in 2022, and co-stars Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and Vic Carmen Sonne as two other nameless acolytes. It’s one of IFC Films and Shudder’s many highly-anticipated horror releases for the year, which also includes In a Violent Nature and Late Night With the Devil, among others.
Azrael is playing in theaters now. Check out the clip below:
