Looks like Chucky’s packing up his knives and saying goodbye to the small screen: it’s been announced that the USA and SYFY series has been canceled after three seasons, despite a fervent fan campaign to renew the series for a fourth.
The series, which featured returning Child’s Play franchise cast members Jennifer Tilly, Brad and Fiona Dourif, and Billy Boyd, served as a continuation of the popular slasher franchise, pitting the murderous munchkin against a group of teenagers in what might have been his craziest adventure yet. Case in point, Season 3 sent him to the White House of all places, with the stakes higher than ever for such a pint-sized killer.
“I’m heartbroken over the news that Chucky won’t be coming back for a fourth season but am so grateful for the killer three years we did have,” said creator Don Mancini. “I’d like to thank UCP/Syfy/Peacock/Eat the Cat, our awesome cast and Toronto-based crew — the best in the business — and finally, to our amazing fans, a big bloody hug. Your incredible #RenewChucky campaign really warmed Chucky’s cold heart. Chucky will return! He ALWAYS comes back.”
The fact that the series survived for three entire seasons is an unfortunate surprise in today’s television landscape, amidst a sea of shows canceled after a single season across both network television and streaming. It helps, of course, that the killer doll arrived on television with a fervent fanbase already behind him, but even then, three seasons is more than expected for a show broadcast across two networks in order to shoulder the cost.
This could, of course, mean that Chucky will make his grand return to the big screen at some point in the future. The last time we saw any version of the character was in 2019’s Child’s Play reboot, which is not at all associated with the original series of films as well as the TV series, so it’s high time we get to hear Brad Dourif’s voice back on the silver screen, if Mancini and co. still have more ideas in store for him.
All three seasons of Chucky are available to stream on Peacock now.
