With all the hell (no pun intended) we’ve been through over the last few years with the spread of COVID-19, the idea of an evil that spreads through something in the air is extra terrifying. The directors of Hold Your Breath seem to understand that, if the trailer for the upcoming period horror film is any indication.
Set in the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma in the 1930s, Hold Your Breath follows a mother who lives out on a lonely far, with her two daughters, without anyone to protect them. As the dust storms roll in, they bring with them something far more dangerous: a “drifter,” who kills a nearby neighbor and frightens everyone in town. But how did he get in, and how did he escape without being caught? Is he carried on the wind, with the dust that threatens to clog their lungs? Or is he made of dust himself?
It’s bad news for everyone, including the mother, who finds herself struggling to sleep, succumbing to hallucinations and fear as the storms cloud both her vision and her mind. But are they really hallucinations? She begins to doubt herself, and doubt, as we know, is the worst possible thing to feel when you’re trapped in a horror movie. Especially one set in the middle of nowhere.
The trailer notably reunites two stars from The Bear: Emmy winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who notably also starred in Marvel’s rather bloody series The Punisher, and Sarah Paulson, who guest-starred in the show’s much-lauded second season and leads the film as the young mother. This isn’t Paulson’s first horror rodeo, obviously, having starred in multiple seasons of FX’s American Horror Story, and in films like Bird Box and Run.
The film also stars Amiah Miller, Annaleigh Ashford, and Alona Jane Robbins, and is directed by Karrie Crouse and Will Joines, from a script by Crouse, with producers Alix Madigan-Yorkin and Lucas Joaquin.
Hold Your Breath arrives on Hulu on October 3. Check out the trailer below:
