In case you missed it in theaters or just want to rewatch it from the comfort of your couch, Longlegs is headed home. NEON announced that audiences will soon be able to enjoy director Oz Perkins’ latest as it will be available for digital purchase and rental beginning August 23. Or, as of this writing, tomorrow. Plan accordingly.
There’s more good news! Longlegs is getting a physical release as well with the film arriving on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray And DVD on September 24. It’s a shame that those who want to add a copy to their physical media shelf will have to wait another month to do so. That said, it’s great that we’re getting a physical release at all. Let’s not forget that recent horror favorites such as The Empty Man and Barbarian never made it to Blu-ray. It could be much worse.
The wait will be worth it as NEON is putting together a fair amount of bonus materials for the release, including on-set interviews with cast and crew, as well as a feature-length commentary track with Perkins. The director’s commentary is also an art that appears to be slowly dying out in the streaming era, so this is certainly welcome news.
Perkins wrote and directed the movie, which stars Maika Monroe, Blair Underwood, Alicia Witt and Nicolas Cage, who continues his run as something of a later-era horror icon. Cage plays the titular killer in the film. NEON opted largely not to show his final transformation, which added a great deal of intrigue to the proceedings. While it was risky not to show the Oscar-winner before the release, it’s a gamble that paid off handsomely.
To date, Longlegs has grossed more than $100 million at the global box office, including an impressive $71 million in North America. That makes it one of the most successful indie horror movies of the last decade. NEON launched one heck of a marketing campaign that included cryptic teasers, ciphers and even a mysterious phone number that people could call that featured a message from Cage in character. The “less is more” methodology proved to be hugely effective.
It now ranks as NEON’s biggest movie ever. Very fortunately for the distributor, they also have another Perkins joining in the can in the form The Monkey, which is adapted from the Stephen King story of the same name. That one hits theaters in February, which makes them look sort of brilliant in retrospect.
