IFC Films has released the first trailer for Out Come the Wolves. This is the latest from director Adam MacDonald, known best for his work on the deadly bear flick Backcountry, which has become an essential entry in the broader canon of bear horror movies. Now, MacDonald is back with another creature feature of sorts, this time focused on a pack of deadly wolves. They may be smaller than bears, to state the obvious, but no less deadly based on the trailer. Check it out.

The trailer offers a fair amount to chew on. It’s more than just a “wolves try to eat people” movie. There is a tense dynamic between the three core characters, with a messy love triangle of sorts driving things forward. That all just gets messier when the wolves arrive. Creature features are fun at a base level but they always play better when there is some level of investment in the characters and story surrounding the creatures. That appears to be precisely what we have here.

We first learned of this film last year when IFC and Shudder scooped up the rights. That’s good news because it means it will be readily accessible for those who want to see it following its theatrical run. Shudder feels like the perfect eventual home for this one. The official synopsis for the film reads as follows:

“Retired hunter Sophie invites her fellow hunter and childhood best friend Kyle to her family’s secluded cabin deep in the woods. There, she plans for Kyle to meet and teach her fiancé Nolan how to hunt for an article he’s writing and to share the news of their engagement. Tensions flare between Kyle and Nolan over their shared history with Sophie, escalating during the hunt that goes awry when they are ambushed by a vicious pack of territorial wolves. As alliances fracture under the pressure of survival, Sophie is forced to rely on her long-abandoned hunting prowess to face the deadly predators and save the one closest to her heart.”

Enuka Okuma (Rookie Blue) penned the screenplay. The cast includes Missy Peregrym (FBI: Most Wanted), Joris Jarsky (The Changeling) and Damon Runyan (Home Before Dark). It’s a minimal cast, which should allow for maximum focus on the story at hand. Jarsky also helped cook up the story, it’s worth noting.

Out Come the Wolves had a long gestation period. We’ve been dreaming of this project for nearly a decade and it was beginning to feel like our own Fury Road,” MacDonald said in a statement. “Now we are here, with the invaluable support from IFC Films and Shudder. My goal was to bring everyone to the edge of their seats till the very last frame. We pushed the limits as far as possible with our amazing Wolf team led by Andrew Simpson. With my collaborator Missy Peregrym, and an incredible creative team, we brought the vision to its full potential. One that will leave a lasting impression, blood, tooth and claw.”

Out Come the Wolves arrives in theaters and on VOD on August 30. For more, check out the special wolf-centric FANGORIA #129 from the archives
